On April 14, 2014, the Yale-China Association will convene its first Yale-China Association Conference titled From Secret Language to Modern Voices: the Changing Role of Women in Modern China.
Through various experts from near and far, this one-day gathering will showcase the progress of women in China’s modern history and present opportunities to discuss the salient topics facing women in China today. The complexities for women in a rapidly-changing China are immense and difficult to assess, but trends have surfaced. Whether a woman in rural China who sought higher wages in an urban center, a single girl in a middle-class family seeking education abroad, or a party official in the All-China Women’s Federation working to overcome poverty, a great deal has changed since Mao Zedong’s famous proclamation that “women hold up half the sky.”
The one-day conference has three goals:
